Wilderness Expedition

The Wilderness Expedition is a trip into the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, an area of more than six million acres of beautiful forests and mountains. We'll set up base camp near Lake Placid, New York, and from there set out on an expedition that includes backpacking, camping, mountaineering, rock climbing and more.

Questions You Might Be Asking

What if I have never been camping or don’t know much about the wilderness?

  • You don’t need to have any prior experience or knowledge. Your Compass RMI leaders are well trained and will tell you everything you need to know.

What if I don’t have any camping and backpacking gear?

  • We will provide all the necessary gear like backpacks, sleeping bags, tents, tarps, ropes, etc. You will need to bring certain clothing like hiking boots and warm clothes. We will give you a complete packing list so you are totally prepared for whatever the mountain brings you.

What if I’m not in good shape? Will I be able to make it through the Wilderness Expedition?

  • The Wilderness Expedition involves backpacking, mountaineering, rock climbing and other physically and mentally challenging activities, but you don’t have to be in perfect shape to participate. As long as you are in good health and a doctor approves your participation, you’ll do just fine. Every activity is "Challenge by Choice," which means you determine your own level of challenge. Plus, the rest of your group will be there to help you.

What about safety?

  • The Wilderness Expedition is run in partnership with the La Vida outdoor education program of Gordon College, one of the top Christian colleges in the nation. La Vida has over 40 years of experience in the Adirondacks working with youth in outdoor education. Expedition guides are certified by Wilderness Medical Associates at the Wilderness Advanced First Aid or Wilderness First Responder level.

Why is the Wilderness Expedition a part of the RMI?

  • Remember Moses? Here was a guy in his forties—in the prime of his working life—and God led him on a forty-year detour. God can teach us things outside of our normal zones of comfort that we would never learn anywhere else. The Wilderness Expedition is more than an adventure. It’s a powerful, life-changing, Moses-like wilderness experience you won't forget.
